Coke Eyes Cannabis-Infused Drink Market

With The Recreational Cannabis Market Opening In Canada, Big Brands Are Ready To Pounce On The Opportunity

Alcohol producers, and one cigarette company, have been in a race to find partners in the cannabis space leading up to the Oct. 17 launch of legal recreational marijuana in Canada, and now it seems Coca-Cola Co will be throwing its hat in as well.

As the company moves further away from the high sugar drink market, the company is eyeing the marijuana drinks market, possibly ready to expand its ambitions to the cannabis beverage market.

Coca-Cola announced September 17th that it was in talks with Canada’s Aurora Cannabis Inc to formulate CBD infused beverages, which is the non-psychotropic element in marijuana. Not surprisingly, Aurora’s stock spiked up, closing up 17 percent on the day of the announcement.

The aim of CBD infused drinks would be to ease inflammation and pain, rather than create a high or buzz for imbibers. This is in contrast to drinks produced by alcohol makers, who will focus on tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana.

CBD infused drinks have already been made available in some markets, by brands such as Dirty Lemon, Sprig and Kickback.
